How to Draw Fire Step by Step

In this step by step drawing tutorial, you will learn how to draw fire step by step…

Step 1
Fire almost always burns on something, so the first thing you need to do is draw something to be on fire.  In this case, I’ll draw fire burning on a log. I’m going to draw a simple log shape here.  You can have your fire burning on whatever you want.

Step 2
What’s interesting about fire is that it is drawn with wavy lines.  It is very similar to drawing water which is ironic.  Draw some wavy lines extending from the thing that you have on fire.  Let the lines that you draw become thicker and thinner in areas.  This will make your fire appear more realistic.

Step 3
Next, continue to draw more wavy lines.  Fire tends to burn in a triangular shape, so your wavy lines should bend towards the middle of the object that is on fire.

Step 4
Continue to draw even more wavy lines.  Be careful not to let your lines overlap.  Fire is more realistic if the lines that you draw for them do not overlap each other.  You can also draw a few wedge shapes over the top of the lapping fire fingers.

Step 5
This gives you an idea of what your line drawing should like at this point.  You can leave it like this if you like, but realistic fire needs color to translate correctly.  So in this tutorial, I’ll add some color to this drawing.

Step 6
Adding color will bring your drawing of fire to life. Contrast is very important here, so let your background be dark and be sure to make your fire very light. That’s how to draw fire, step by step.
