In this step by step drawing demonstration, you will learn how to draw an owl. If you want to learn how to draw other animals, be sure to check out the How to Draw Animals page.
In this drawing tutorial, you will learn how to draw an owl. Owls can be mysterious birds because most of them are nocturnal. They are birds of prey, hunting mostly small mammals. Owls are also pretty funky because a group of them are called a parliament.
So, get that pencil ready and let’s draw a owl.
Begin your drawing of an owl by drawing two shapes stacked on top of each other like in the picture on the right. The smaller shape will be the head and the bottom will become the body of the owl.
Now, connect the top shape with the bottom shape by drawing the neck of the owl. Add a flattened “u” shape for the eyebrow area of the owl and bring a “v” shape down for the beak of the owl. Also, add the ears here. You will also need to draw a couple of shapes for the upper parts of the legs.
Now we’ll start to add some of the details to the owl. Draw a couple of circles for the outside portions of the eyes. Draw a branch for the owl to be perched upon. Draw a couple of the features coming down the back of the owl and add some talons as well.
Finish the eyes here by drawing a couple more circles filling the inner circle in. Be sure to leave a little white circle for the highlight. Add a few more lines to indicate some texture on the owl. Also, add some lines to the branch.
It may look like a lot has happened here since the last step, but don’t be fooled. All you’ll need to do in this step is add the texture to the owl as you finish the drawing. You may choose to go over your pencil lines with an ink pen. Allow for the ink to dry and then erase any lines that may remain.
